Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid – Complete Review
When we talk about street bikes in India, one name that immediately comes to mind is Yamaha FZ. For almost 20 years, this bike has been one of the top choices for youngsters who wanted style, performance, and comfort in a budget-friendly package. Over the years, Yamaha kept updating the FZ with new designs, better engines, and modern features.
Now, Yamaha has introduced something completely new – the Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid. As the name suggests, this bike comes with Hybrid technology, which is a very big step in the commuter and street bike segment.
Today, I will give you a complete review of this bike – its design, performance, mileage, features, technology, and also my personal riding experience. By the end of this review, you will clearly know whether the Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is the right bike for you.
What is special about the Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid?
The word Hybrid in bikes usually confuses many people. In cars, hybrid means the combination of a petrol engine with an electric motor. Yamaha has used a similar idea here but in a simpler way.
The FZ-S Hybrid gets a Smart Motor Generator (SMG) which assists the engine. This SMG helps in two ways:
1. Battery-assisted acceleration – When you accelerate, the motor gives a small push of power. This helps the bike feel smoother and reduces engine strain.
2. Silent engine start – The bike starts more quietly and smoothly compared to a normal bike.
Apart from this, Yamaha has added a Start-Stop System (SSS). This feature turns off the engine automatically when the bike is standing idle, for example at a traffic signal. As soon as you press the clutch, the engine restarts instantly. This saves fuel in the long run.
So, the Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is not just a normal street bike. It is a future-ready commuter bike with modern hybrid technology.
My riding experience
When I rode this bike, the first thing I noticed was how smooth the engine feels. Yamaha has always been famous for smooth engines, but here the hybrid system makes it even better.
Yes, the power is not very high. At 12.2 bhp, it is slightly on the lower side, especially when compared to sporty bikes in the same segment. But this bike is not made for racing. It is made for daily city use, and in that area, it shines.
The biggest positive I found was the mileage. The older FZ models usually gave around 48–50 kmpl. But the FZ-S Hybrid gave me up to 58 kmpl. That is a very good improvement, especially with rising fuel prices.
The design is also attractive. Yamaha has not made any big changes here because the FZ’s design is already popular. The bike looks muscular, stylish, and premium, and still carries that FZ DNA which youngsters love.
Design and Looks
The design of the FZ-S Hybrid is muscular and sporty, just like the older FZ models. Yamaha knows that FZ riders love the street-fighter look, so they kept the overall design similar but added small premium touches.
The tank is sculpted with sharp lines, giving the bike a strong road presence. The headlamp design is aggressive, and the integrated turn indicators look modern. Even though Yamaha has not overdone the styling, the bike looks premium and stylish.
The two colour options – Racing Blue and Cyan Metallic Blue – look fantastic. Both shades give the bike a sporty personality and make it stand out on the road.
Features and Technology
The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is also loaded with new-age features. Some of the major highlights are:
4.2-inch colour TFT screen: This is a digital screen that shows all the information like speed, fuel level, trip meter, and more in bright colours. It looks modern and premium.
Y-Connect app support: This feature connects the bike to your smartphone. You can get calls, SMS, and notifications on the bike’s screen. It also shows fuel consumption, ride history, maintenance alerts, and more.
Turn-by-turn navigation: With Google Maps, you can get live navigation directly on the TFT screen. This is very helpful in cities.
Repositioned handlebar and switchgear: Yamaha has changed the handlebar position slightly for more comfort, and also updated the switches to feel better.
Hinged fuel tank cap: Now the fuel tank cap is attached to the tank, which makes refuelling easier and more convenient.
Riding Comfort
The Yamaha FZ series has always been a comfortable street bike, and the hybrid version continues the tradition. The seat is wide and soft enough for both rider and pillion. The riding posture is upright, which makes it perfect for city traffic and long rides.
The bike’s light weight of 136 kg makes it easy to handle, even for new riders. Cornering feels confident, and the brakes with ABS add safety.
Performance and Mileage
The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid uses a 149cc BS6 engine that produces 12.2 bhp of power and 13.3 Nm of torque. On paper, these numbers are not very high, but the bike is tuned for smoothness and mileage rather than raw power.
For city use, the acceleration is good enough. The bike can handle daily traffic, overtakes, and short highway rides without any problem.
The mileage of 55–58 kmpl is one of the strongest points of this bike. With a 13-litre fuel tank, you can expect a riding range of 650–700 km in one full tank. That is very practical for Indian roads.
Safety and Braking
The FZ-S Hybrid comes with disc brakes at both front and rear, along with a single-channel ABS. This gives controlled braking and more confidence during sudden stops. The tyres are wide, which also improves grip and stability.
Now let’s look at the 7 major specifications
1. Engine
The bike has a 149cc BS6 engine. This means it runs on petrol, is eco-friendly, and meets the latest pollution rules. The engine is air-cooled and made for smooth city rides.
2. Power and Torque
It produces 12.2 bhp of power and 13.3 Nm of torque. Power is the bike’s strength for speed, while torque helps in acceleration and pulling. These numbers are perfect for a commuter bike.
3. Weight
The bike weighs 136 kg. This is quite light, making it easy to control, handle in traffic, and park even in tight spaces.
4. Fuel Tank Capacity
The bike has a 13-litre fuel tank. With its mileage, this gives a riding range of up to 700 km. That means fewer visits to the petrol pump.
5. Mileage
The mileage is around 55–58 km per litre. This makes it one of the most fuel-efficient bikes in its class.
6. Brakes and Safety
It comes with front and rear disc brakes plus ABS. ABS prevents the wheels from locking during sudden braking, keeping the rider safe.
7. Features
The bike has modern features like a TFT display, smartphone connectivity, navigation, Start-Stop System, and hybrid technology. These features make it advanced compared to other bikes in this price range.
Price and Value
The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is slightly more expensive than normal commuter bikes because of its extra features. But when you compare it with other 150cc street bikes, the pricing is reasonable. Considering its mileage, features, and Yamaha’s Japanese reliability, the bike offers good value for money.
MY OPINION
The Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is a perfect blend of style, technology, mileage, and comfort. It is not the most powerful 150cc bike, but it is definitely one of the most advanced. The hybrid system, start-stop feature, smartphone connectivity, and modern design make it a future-ready street bike.
If you want a bike that looks premium, saves fuel, and is comfortable for daily rides, the Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid is a very strong option in 2025.
